Hamiltonian increasing paths in random edge orderings

چکیده
Let f be an edge ordering of Kn: a bijection E(Kn) → {1, 2, . . . , ( n 2 ) }. For an edge e ∈ E(Kn), we call f(e) the label of e. An increasing path in Kn is a simple path (visiting each vertex at most once) such that the label on each edge is greater than the label on the previous edge. We let S(f) be the number of edges in the longest increasing path. Chvátal and Komlós raised the question of estimating m(n): the minimum value of S(f) over all orderings f of Kn. The best known bounds on m(n) are √ n− 1 ≤ m(n) ≤ ( 1 2 + o(1) ) n, due respectively to Graham and Kleitman, and to Calderbank, Chung, and Sturtevant. Although the problem is natural, it has seen essentially no progress for three decades. In this paper, we consider the average case, when the ordering is chosen uniformly at random. We discover the surprising result that in the random setting, S(f) often takes its maximum possible value of n− 1 (visiting all of the vertices with a Hamiltonian increasing path). We prove that this occurs with probability at least about 1/e. We also prove that with probability 1 − o(1), there is an increasing path of length at least 0.85n, suggesting that this Hamiltonian (or near-Hamiltonian) phenomenon may hold asymptotically almost surely.

Cycles and paths in edge-colored graphs with given degrees
Sufficient degree conditions for the existence of properly edge-colored cycles and paths in edge-colored graphs, multigraphs and random graphs are inverstigated. In particular, we prove that an edgecolored multigraph of order n on at least three colors and with minimum colored degree greater than or equal to d 2 e has properly edge-colored cycles of all possible lengths, including hamiltonian c...
متن کاملEdge-disjoint Hamiltonian Paths and Cycles in Tournaments
We describe sufficient conditions for the existence of Hamiltonian paths in oriented graphs and use these to provide a complete description of the tournaments with no two edge-disjoint Hamiltonian paths. We prove that tournaments with small irregularity have many edge-disjoint Hamiltonian cycles in support of Kelly's conjecture.
متن کاملDynamical Properties of Some Adic Systems with Arbitrary Orderings
We consider arbitrary orderings of the edges entering each vertex of the (downward directed) Pascal graph. Each ordering determines an adic (Bratteli-Vershik) system, with a transformation that is defined on most of the space of infinite paths that begin at the root. We prove that for every ordering the coding of orbits according to the partition of the path space determined by the first three ...
متن کاملEulerian tour algorithms for data visualization and the PairViz package
PairViz is an R package that produces orderings of statistical objects for visualization purposes. We abstract the ordering problem to one of constructing edge-traversals of (possibly weighted) graphs. PairViz implements various edge traversal algorithms which are based on Eulerian tours and Hamiltonian decompositions. We describe these algorithms, their PairViz implementation and discuss their...
متن کاملTheorem (in any field of Characteristic 2):
In Graph Theory a number of results were devoted to studying the computational complexity of the number modulo 2 of a graph’s edge set decompositions of various kinds, first of all including its Hamiltonian decompositions, as well as the number modulo 2 of, say, Hamiltonian cycles/paths etc. While the problems of finding a Hamiltonian decomposition and Hamiltonian cycle are NP-complete, countin...
